Industrial Radiographer Certification
Rule 420-3-26-.04(16)(a) requires that individuals who use radioactive material or x-ray machines for industrial radiography have to be certified through an approved independent certifying entity or an approved certifying state. As a service to the licensees and registrants in Alabama, the Office of Radiation Control has entered into an Agreement with the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc. (CRCPD) and the Texas Bureau of Radiation Control to provide the appropriate examinations and issue industrial radiographer certification cards for radioactive material and/or x-ray machines. This Agreement requires the Texas Bureau of Radiation Control to develop and supply an industrial radiography examination for the State of Alabama. The tests are received from the Texas Bureau of Radiation Control through the CRCPD as established in the Agreement. At this time, testing is conducted on a quarterly basis in Montgomery, Alabama.
Radiographer Certification Requirements
The Office of Radiation Control issues industrial radiography certification identification (ID) cards to individuals who successfully complete and document on appropriate forms the following:
Complete a radiation safety course accepted by Alabama, another Agreement State, or the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission that consists of at least 40 hours on the subjects in 420-3-26-.04(16)(g).
Document on-the-job training (OJT) as a radiographer’s assistant, supervised by one or more radiographers, which includes:
- 320 hours of active participation in radioactive material operations
- 160 hours of active participation in x-ray machine operations
- Combined 480 hours of active participation in radioactive material and x-ray machine operations
Take and pass an industrial radiographer certification examination administered by an approved, independent certifying organization or certifying state.
Once the above requirements are met, the individual will receive a certification ID card that is valid for 5 years. The ID card authorizes the individual to perform industrial radiography with radioactive material, x-ray machines, or both radioactive materials and x-ray machines. At the end of the 5 year period, the individual retest in order to renew the certification.
