The Alabama Department of Public Health jointly regulates Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) with the Alabama Department of Insurance. The Provider Services Unit monitors selected activities of HMOs and other organizations offering supplemental Medicare coverage through "Medicare Select" products. 

In addition, the Provider Services Unit certifies and regulates utilization review agents conducting utilization review activities in Alabama. We want to assure that utilization review agents adhere to reasonable standards. Our purpose is to ensure that utilization review agents maintain the confidentiality of medical records in accordance with applicable laws. We promote greater coordination and cooperation between health care providers and utilization review agents by providing an updated list of Utilization Review Agents on this website.
