Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that is very common in Alabama, as well as throughout the world. The number of people with diabetes is growing every year, as more people are becoming obese. This program will cover the basics of diabetes care and management. It will begin with a look at what causes diabetes, followed by a consideration of risk factors, particularly ethnicity and obesity.
The importance of self-monitoring the glucose levels in blood will be discussed. The recognition and treatment of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) will be described.
Finally, the medications used to treat Type1 and Type 2 Diabetes will be discussed. This program should give you a basic understanding of what causes diabetes and how it can be treated.
